In cases of cruel Irony, Death Seeker characters who snap out of it and find something to live for often end up dying or getting killed shortly afterwards anyway. Contrast Immortality Seeker, for those utterly dedicated to avoiding death. Compare and contrast Not Afraid to Die, where someone is definitely unafraid of death, but isn't actively seeking it out. These characters are, however, prone to Revenge by Proxy. Also see Miles to Go Before I Sleep. Some immortal characters who contracted a bad case of Who Wants to Live Forever? M& M's Minis, on the other hand, actively seek those who will eat them, in a bizarre example of the trope. Tons of chocolate candies searching for a mouth! According to his former master, Hiko Seijuurou, Kenshin's Superpowered Evil Side has roots in both this, and his former Knight Templar mindset: Kenshin's guilt for his time as an assassin caused him to take his own life for granted, and was willing to die if it meant protecting the innocent and receiving penance for his sins. This sense of despair was what caused Kenshin's Thou Shalt Not Kill vow to waver, seeing himself as a lost cause and prepared to further damn himself for the sake of others. You can clearly see that his purpose for jumping here and there in the battlefield isn't to decapitate some enemies' heads, but to find someone strong enough to kill him. The problem is, his reason remains mystery, even after he died in the Big Bad's hand. It's also clear that he seek neither forgiveness, nor salvation. The Death Seeker trope as used in popular culture. At some point in the past, some characters have had a traumatic experience, found themselves dishonored. The German Army had been heavily defeated in. He's developed a fatal heart condition, so he's not actively looking to die as it's going to happen regardless. Ichigaki's team really wants, in contrast to their seemingly Blood Knight ways. And Sensui's entire reason for opening the tunnel to Makai. This way, they cause the Internet to . This gets a whole lot trickier when Lelouch places a Geass on him instructing him to . Thus, whenever he tries to do something suicidal, or even just accepts that death will be the result of his current situation, the Geass command forces him to take any action he possibly can to avoid dying. Given the nature of the series, this has predictably tragic results. It doesn't stop him from trying, though, which leads to Suzaku destroying the Tokyo settlement when he tried to let Kallen kill him while carrying a nuke. Nice Job Breaking It, Hero! However, he does use the Geass to his advantage at one point. When he fights an enemy with a Geass that allows him to see into the future, Suzaku uses the . Lampshaded by Lelouch, who comments on how powerful his mental discipline is. The Geass even provides him with knowledge he shouldn't even be able to have; his reflexes tell him when to throw a spear that will disable a FLEJA nuke. She can survive getting shot in the head, being burned at the stake, and even being crushed by the intense water pressure at the bottom of the ocean. The entire reason she's gone around granting Geass powers to people like Mao and Lelouch is because she needs someone to become powerful enough to kill her. Somewhat subverted in this case, Lelouch mentions her . At that point he was initially willing to let the Knights kill him until Rolo came in for the rescue, and only after the latter's sacrifice did he regain the willpower to take down his father, Charles zi Britannia. After doing this, he reaches an agreement with Suzaku to team up and also punish each other in the process. Unlike the other two death seekers, Lelouch actually pulls it off in the end and makes his death a part of his ultimate plan to change the world. Fullmetal Alchemist. Hohenheim wants to die, and really really sucks at it. He does know that he has some plot- like things to do first, but death is a definite goal for him, and he is likely trying to track down the Big Bad in order to find out how he can die, as well as to defeat the bad guys. He likely is a character who would not mind dying to escape his horrifying and very long past. Ironically, when he finally is able to die at the end of the series, his last words are that, now that he's here, he kind of wants to keep living. However, it's too late. Lust in the 2. 00. May have been Reccoa's true motivation for turning traitor in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, as having been a guerrilla fighter for nine years had worn her resolve against tyranny down to nearly nothing. However, he repeatedly refuses to, even as she becomes increasingly more sadistic in her attempts to provoke him to do so. He dies shortly afterward in a not quite successful suicide attack on the Big Bad. In Digimon Tamers, Beelzemon could be considered this after his Heel. At the very least, he recklessly throws himself into battle and doesn't seem to care whether he lives or dies—he gets mortally wounded at one point and presses the Tamers to continue on and rescue Jeri instead of helping him, and expresses more frustration about his inability to help than the fact that he was, you know, dying. Somewhere along the line, he somehow latches onto the idea that he wants Sousuke to kill him (and if that doesn't work, killing Sousuke and raping his body works just fine as well). His suicidal and extreme sadomasochistic tendencies are somewhat explained in the novels, where it's revealed that he had lethal cancer that would kill him sooner or later. The only irony is, it seems the more he throws himself into danger and suicidal situations, the longer he lives. While Agito hated her for it, she thanked her for giving him his last honor as a fellow knight. Roberta also has elements of this in the latest arc of the manga. Later on there's Cynthia, who is feeling horribly guilty about not being able to save her commander Flora in the Northern Campaign, and begs Yuma to kill her. Yuma isn't having any of it. Rossiu from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann plans to commit suicide after everything he did almost ended in Humanity's extinction, it takes a punch from Simon to prevent this. He still.. Natsu.. Not only that, Natsu is also Zeref's younger brother, who died centuries ago and whose death would start him on the path to become what he is today — Zeref created E. N. D. That's right, Zeref is so desperate to die that he turned his younger brother into a Laser Guided Tyke Bomb with the sole purpose of killing him. Rather than actively trying to die, he was waiting for his life force to drain so that he could be free from the guilt of accidentally causing the death of Karen Lilica. Lucy manages to break him out of this. While he isn't actively wishing for death, he throws himself into suicidal battles against creatures that greatly exceed the power of man with reckless abandon. It can be argued that he doesn't expect to actually beat the Apostles and Godhand, but is merely killing them off due to his unquenchable hatred until one of them finally manages to best him. Early on he begs Ayace to do so, but Ayace refuses. Later Ayace makes a promise that if Canale brings destruction on Preveza he will kill him, so until then he should try living normally, which reassures Canale greatly. Unfortunately, she does not die; she becomes a witch. Kyoko probably has some of this trope as well (stemming from her ultra- tragic backstory), given how she reacts to Sayaka's downfall. One Piece Jimbei makes it clear several times throughout the Marineford battle that he expected to die. He appears to be fine with this outcome, though. Nico Robin loses her last hope and purpose to life at the end of the Alabasta arc. He is the older brother of Mokuba. Priest Seto is his Egyptian incarnate. He is the majority shareholder and CEO of his own multi- national gaming company, Kaiba. Corp, and aims to become the world's greatest player of Duel Monsters. To accomplish this goal, he must defeat his arch- rival, Yugi Muto. He is the modern- day lookalike counterpart of Priest Seto himself, the original keeper of the mighty Blue- Eyes White Dragon. Although there are a few occasions when he helps Yugi when faced with a common enemy. He also does appear to have ethics, as he does not believe in stealing from others to get ahead in life, as is proven in his duel against Zigfried. He has proven to strongly believe in hard work and determination, and dislikes people who steal or cheat. Takahashi's friend asked this person to teach him how to play a card game, but he replied ! Come back when you've collected 1. The story made Takahashi mad, but thought the player would make a good character. He also reconstructed Kaiba to make him a semi- lead character and rival to Yugi. Depicted here is the Duelist in the outfit he wears in the Battle City arc from front, side, and rear views and alongside views of his head from different angles. Kaiba's character design was overseen by Kazuki Takahashi. His usual outfit from the second series anime consists of a long white sleeveless Kaiba. Corp- designed coat featuring shoulder pads and a raised studded collar, with black sleeves from his shirt coming out from under. He has extra belts in pairs strapped around his upper arms and shins. He often wears a Kaiba. Corp Duel Disk on his left arm. He later wears this outfit during the events of the Legendary Hero. Duel Monsters, Kaiba has brown hair. Kaiba's character design in Yu- Gi- Oh! GX anime is nearly identical to his original appearance, although his facial structure is changed subtly. Kaiba usually calls Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) names, such as . This name calling was carried over to the dub. At one point, he kept running into them during Waking the Dragons, and quipped . He's sarcastic, rude, usually selfish and power- hungry, no- nonsense and down- to- earth, while he may seem very realistic, but, as Atem has said so multiple times, he can be very clueless. Plus, he is fairly condescending and scathing to everyone, with the exception of Mokuba, the only person he is consistently shown to treat with love and care. However, it is stated by Mokuba ever since being adopted by Gozaburo, Kaiba has rarely smiled, if at all. Mokuba has also noted he's become much colder than he used to be. Despite this, Kaiba still has strong brotherly instincts for Mokuba and will put his life in danger in a heart beat to safeguard Mokuba's life. Kaiba also threw himself between Zorc and 2 Egyptian children, thus enabling them to make a getaway. At various points during the series, he opens up momentarily, performing kind acts, though always covering them up with sarcasm, and denying them if asked. These occurrences increase in frequency towards the later series. Aside from that, Kaiba maintains a stony, ice- cold exterior. When their adoptive brother Noah had hypnotized Mokuba into not remembering him and thinking Noah was his real brother, Kaiba revealed how much he cared about him to try to make him remember; in one Season 1 episode of the second series anime, after Pegasus is defeated, Kaiba tells Yugi that Mokuba . This is shown when Kaiba risks his own life by standing on a ledge to win the Duel against Yugi so that he can get to Pegasus to save Mokuba. Even when Kaiba preaches that no one gets away with trying to take over his company, he risks Kaiba. Corp when Dueling Noah for Mokuba. This results in his sense of superiority and sense of arrogance, making it extremely difficult to earn his respect, and causes him to look down on and treat others as inferior until they do so. This gives him difficulty when forced to rely on others and work as a team. His pride in himself and his accomplishments is a prominent part of his character throughout the series, and he reacts harshly to those who threaten or infringe on it (although it is toned down slightly towards the end). This is shown in Yu- Gi- Oh! Kaiba goes so far as to attack Joey's . According to Takahashi, Kaiba's obsession with the . This may also be due to Kaiba's affinity for Dragon- Type monsters. Later on, during sagas like Waking the Dragons, he openly admits to believing in all the supernatural events occurring around him, instead of just ignorantly saying they don't exist as he always does (although it is possible that he thinks that it's science instead of magic, and doesn't hesitate to do something about it). However, the closest in the dub that Kaiba has come to this is . In the Doma arc, he told Alister he should show him the power of a . During the Duel against Dartz, Kaiba destroyed the . Although there are some instances where Kaiba is a believer in both the Japanese and dub. One such example would be during his final turn against Zigfried von Schroeder when he predicted he would draw exactly the spell cards he would need to defeat Zigfried, despite initially only having one card in his hand. Yugi constantly holds out hope for him, as does Yugi's other self Yami. Though Yami himself finds Kaiba's attitude and arrogance quite infuriating. As was shown on the times they've been forced to Duel together as a team. Kaiba, for the most part, could not care less about what they think about him and returns the contempt in kind. Priest Seto is depicted as being less antagonistic than modern- day Kaiba, and is portrayed as being very loyal with a strong sense of justice. However, he maintains Kaiba's pride and intelligent mind. He has a vast belief that hard work and determination is what gets you ahead in life, not stealing from others to advance your situation. As such, he is disgusted by Zigfried and Noah, calling them pathetic and not worth living up to his company because they were planning on stealing his works to take his company instead of earning it through the hard work and determination he went through. However, when he lost, he decided on a new path, rather an old one, of building Kaiba Land all around the world. However, he vowed his battle with Yugi is far from over, even though they never had an on- screen Duel after this. Their relatives took everything from their will and sent Seto and Mokuba to the orphanage. He told him that he will be his father from there on and vowed to protect him no matter what. He advised Mokuba to always stay on his guard, as he will be finished if he shows any weakness. Seto said that one day they would open real theme parks around the world, that everyone would want to visit. Seto, who was 1. 2 at the time, saw the chance to challenge him to a game of chess, with the stakes being that Gozaburo was to adopt Seto and Mokuba together, if Seto wins. Gozaburo refused at first, but when Seto threatened to tell everyone he backed down from a challenge with a child, he submits. Seto won since he had already studied Gozaburo's chess methods. Gozaburo then reluctantly adopted both brothers. Noah had been injured in an accident and had his mind uploaded into a virtual world, as he was unable to survive in his real body. Gozaburo also wanted to use Seto to motivate Noah to work harder. However, Seto proved to be more capable of running Kaiba. Corp than Noah. Gozaburo abandoned his idea to transfer Noah's mind into Seto's body and focused his energies in training Seto. Gozaburo forced Seto into a rigorously accelerated education program. Gozaburo called this boring, but Seto protested that games purify the soul. Gozaburo was not interested as games cannot be used to rule and ordered Hobson to confiscate all of Seto's toys, refusing to let Seto touch toys until he knew how to rule. Gozaburo disallowed him from having weekends off. As Gozaburo said that discipline is the only way to crush your enemies, Seto protested that he has no enemies. Gozaburo insisted that he does and he must learn that he can't even trust Gozaburo. He ordered Hobson to confiscate all of Seto's toys, so that they won't distract him from his studies.). He also left a note saying that their new family couldn't take everything away from them. Kaiba stepped out onto a balcony and vowed to get a real . Seto had achieved a name for himself as a prodigy. A German man introduced his son as a prodigy too. His son, Zigfried von Schroeder, whispered to Seto asking if they should spice things up. Then the lights began to flicker on and off. Gozaburo was astonished as the system was protected by a fail safe system. Zigfried whispered to Kaiba that he dabbles in technology. He said that spending all your time alone causes you to tinker in your own projects and Seto must understand. Seto returned all the money within a single day. He did this by buying 5. Seto then made the president buy it back, under threat of it being shut down and leaving the employees jobless. However, Gozaburo intended to use it for war. Seto confronted him over this, but Gozaburo scolded him again for wanting to play games. Seto was to inherit the company one day, Gozaburo said, and the company is about beating enemies and rising to power, not making toys. Seto called him insane and Gozaburo had his guards take Seto away. That was the last time he called Gozaburo . He lost his respect for Gozaburo, and decided that he would take over Kaiba. Corp. He told the Big Five that Gozaburo didn't give them the respect they deserved and he would treat them better once he becomes in charge. Seto made sure Gozaburo came to know of their plan and accused Mokuba of snitching on them. Seto and Mokuba were briefly turned against each other and Mokuba was given comfort by Gozaburo. Aware of Seto's plan, Gozaburo planned to use his remaining 4. Mokuba's 2% to overrule Seto. However, Seto had planned a step ahead knowing how Mokuba was very supportive of Seto's dream to turn Kaiba. Directed by Janice Cooke. INTRODUCTIONWhile we all want to do our best to prepare for a coming crisis, and many of us realize the city is perhaps the worst place to live, very few people are really prepared to pack up the old Winnebago and head for the hills. Most Americans, whether they’re aware or not, are going to stay in the cities. This is not a hasty decision for most people. Most of us depend on the city for our livelihood, and we can be better prepared by continuing to live in the city, earn a good income, and make preparations for exiting the city at the appropriate time or by staying in the city and living off existing supplies. This special report explains some of the most critical dangers of living in a city and presents some solutions to surviving them. If you are one of the people who has decided to stay in the city, you’ll benefit greatly from this information. CITIES ARE ARTIFICIALEvery city is an artificial construct. Cities formed as people came together to conduct business, participate in social interaction, and benefit from efficiencies in public services (such as schools, sewers, water, etc.) and a common defense. Yet cities cannot survive alone. They need resources from the country; most notably, food, water and electricity. While electricity and water can sometimes be created or found within city limits, the acreage requirements of food dictate that no city could possibly feed its own people. Read that last phrase carefully: No city can feed its own people. Cities are, by their very nature, dependent on the importation of food. The advent of just- in- time delivery systems to our grocery stores means that most cities would run out of food within a week if supplies were for some reason disrupted. Remember, cities are not self- sufficient. Although they may seem to be in 2. American farmer for their support, something almost all Americans take for granted (except the farmer, of course.)RISKS IN THE CITYThe city presents some serious risks during a crisis. The four most serious ones are: The collapse of social order (riots). The failure of the water treatment and delivery systems. The depletion of food supplies. The failure of the power grid. While not every situation will appear in every city, every situation will most certainly appear in some cities. Will that include yours? We’ll tackle these one at a time: 1. THE COLLAPSE OF SOCIAL ORDER“Social order” is a delicate thing, and it exists as a psychological barrier that could easily collapse under the right conditions. We all saw this during the L. Riots following the Rodney King trial verdict as citizens of L. More recently we were all witness to the looting, violence and total breakdown of society following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Riots can spring up quickly. What allowed this to happen? Simple: the simultaneous melting away of the psychological barrier of “order.” Once people realized 9. Law and Order” ceased to exist in their minds. They then conducted their lives in the way they always wanted to, but couldn’t because of the police. ![]() That is, they ran out to the local stores and just took whatever they wanted (looting). They took out their racial frustration on innocent victims who happened to be driving through the area, and they let loose on a path of destruction that only stopped when men with rifles (the National Guard) were called in to settle things down. In other words, only the threat of immediate death stopped the looting and violence. Rifles work wonders. Imagine store owners lying prone on the roofs of their stores with AK- 4. Abduwali Muse is now in residence at the Federal Correction Complex at Terre Haute, Ind. On the big screen he is portrayed by Barkhad Abdirahman. This is exactly what happened in Los Angeles. But worse, imagine the lawless horde firing at the rescue copters trying to bring in supplies to the desperate masses. The National Guard eventually got things under control. This event was isolated, however, to one city. Imagine a hundred cities experiencing the same thing. Will the National Guard be able to handle the load? What about local police? They aren’t fools; if things look bad enough, they’ll grab their families and head for the hills, just like they did in New Orleans. No pension is worth getting killed for. It would require all- out martial law and military force to have any chance whatsoever of bringing order to these streets. And the reality is that there are not enough military in the USA to secure all of the cities if this happens. This collapse of social order is perhaps the greatest risk of staying in the city during a crisis. What, exactly, would cause this collapse of social order? Lack of three things: food, water, and money. When people run out of food, some will begin ransacking their neighborhood, searching for something to eat. They are not necessarily your friends.) It won’t take long, then, for violence to take over in some cities. While certain regions will certainly manage to keep things under control and people will form lines at the local (depleted) Red Cross shelter, other cities will see an explosion of violence. Imagine the gang- infested regions of L. A., Chicago, New York, St. Louis & New Orleans. Do you think those people are going to stand in line and wait? They already have guns; now they finally get to use them. Pent- up racial tensions & hostilities will simply serve as justification for shooting people of the same or other color in order to get their food. Even if the food somehow gets into the cities, lack of money (due to the government not sending out checks) could cause the same thing. Eventually, lack of money results in looting and mass theft. As the stealing balloons, it also results in a collapse of social order. Water; the same thing (but faster). The collapse of social order is also very dangerous because it doesn’t require any “actual” collapse of the power grid, telecommunications, transportation or banking. Social order is a psychological artifact. It is a frame of mind, and any global panic can quickly remove the mental barrier that right now keeps people basically “lawful.”2. THE FAILURE OF WATER TREATMENT AND DELIVERY SYSTEMSWill the water treatment facilities fail during a crisis? The problem lies in figuring out whether yours will. Certainly, they depend on electricity, and testing conducted on some plants has already revealed weaknesses in the system. In one such test, the water treatment plant released a fatal dose of fluoride into the water system when tested. The computers thought they were 9. If you happened to be downstream, drinking that water, you were dead. Fluoride, no matter what misinformed dentists tell you, is actually a fatal poison. A major crisis likely to demonstrate this fact in more than one city. The most important question here, though, is about what will happen when the water stops flowing (or if it is flowing, but it’s not drinkable). As you are probably aware, while people can live without food for long periods of time (2- 3 weeks), water is needed on a daily basis. You can go 2- 3 days without it, at most, but beyond that, you’ll quickly turn to dust. That means people will do anything to get water, because to not have it means death. And guess where it’s going to be the most difficult to actually get water? You guessed it: in the cities. During the first day of the water crisis, many people still won’t figure out what’s going on. They’ll figure it’s a temporary breakage of a water main and the government will get it fixed within hours. As those hours stretch into the next day, these people will get very worried. By the second day, more and more people will realize the water isn’t coming. At that point, you could easily see a breakdown of social order, as described in the previous section (as you can see, these things all tend to cause each other.). People will begin their “search for water,” and the first place they’re likely to go is where they always go for liquids: the grocery store, the local Wal- Mart, the 7- 1. The shelves will be cleaned out rather quickly. Beyond that (because those liquids aren’t going to last long), you’re going to see people engaged in a mass- exodus from the cities. They’ll take the gas they have left in their tanks and they’ll leave the city in search of water. Some will go to “Grandma’s house” out in the country where they might at least find a pond or stream to drink from. Others will simply go on an expanded looting mission, stopping at any house they see and asking the residents (with a gun in their face, likely) if they have any water to “donate.”As a result of all this, if water stops flowing, here are the events you can expect to see in some of the worse- off cities: Looting of all the grocery stores by the second or third day (remember New Orleans?). Minor outbreaks of violence during the looting. Shop owners, for example, may attempt to defend their shops with firearms (ala L. Riots). Mass exodus of residents from the city in search of water. Ransacking of any houses or farms within a gas- tank radius of the city. Mass traffic jams on the outbound highways as people run out of gas and abandon their vehicles (if bad enough, this could actually block the highways and trap people in the cities) (Remember Hurricane Rita?). Mass outbreak of water- borne diseases as people use streams and rivers as both a water fountain and a bathroom. People crapping upstream are going to infect the people drinking downstream. Very few have any kind of water filtration device. That last point is really critical. Once the water flow stops, disease is going to strike. THE DEPLETION OF FOOD SUPPLIESThe food supplies will likely dwindle quickly as we approach a possible crisis due to people stocking up just in case. Once the crisis actually hits, expect to see breakdowns in the transportation sector that will result in major delays in food delivery. The first movie was a standalone classic, but of course the movie industry had to give the movie another go. They struggled to find another wedding to put on to the extent that they gave an existing married couple another wedding. I'm not saying this movie is bad, but it's just unnecessary. One thing I can say about this romantic comedy is that it had a lot of beautiful moments. Moments where you cry, laugh, or just reminisce at. This wasn't an Oscar winning film or an action blockbuster, but it was a beautiful story about family and its importance. Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Elena Kampouris, Rita Wilson, Lainie Kazan, Michael Constantine, John Stamos, Andrea Martin, and Alex Wolff. There are a lot of different sub plots and character arcs in this film for lots of different characters, but on the whole they were balanced fairly well. I've always particularly enjoyed Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine's performances as Maria and Gus Portokalos, the classic old married couple with no shortage of comedic moments. No Oscars here, but the primary purpose was to entertain, so that's ok I guess. This film is mainly comedy and family, and it certainly entertained me. I really enjoyed this film's comedic value. The setting is also hilarious, this massive Greek family in a proud American suburb, and this is explored more so than in the first film. The themes were many and meaningful, including acceptance, family, adolescence, independence, happiness, love, tradition, and respect. This film has something for everyone. Even if you're not a rom com fan, I'm sure you will enjoy something in this movie. The potential for sequels was left open- ended, with a family member coming out as gay and Paris developing a love interest for a Greek boy from her school, any of these could be the subject for another big fat Greek wedding. Actress Nia Vardalos has come up with an idea and discussions are in the works. I'm going to sound extremely hypocritical here but I'm interested to see how Paris's story ends.. No cliches here either. The running time was perfect for this film. The previous instalment, the original, was better in every way in my opinion, but this did just fine as far as sequels go. And no, you don't need to have seen the original to understand this one, you pick up the context pretty quickly. ALOT is identical in this one, from the formatting to lines to the general plot. Director Jones let nostalgia consume this film a little more than it should have. Some of the sub plots were unnecessary (grandfather in bathtub) while others should've received more attention (family member coming out)! This is a very easy trap to fall into. It had some beautifully emotional moments and fantastic themes at its core with some great nostalgic moments from the first film. But this doesn't escape the fact that this film shouldn't exist and therefore I shouldn't be writing this review. Note to movie makers; leave great individual movies ALONE. Mindfulness is all the rage nowadays. But what is it, exactly? If you try to define it yourself, what do you come up with? If you compare your answer with the answers of others, you might find quite a bit of heterogeneity. That wouldn’t surprise me; while mindfulness is of interest to many, it’s hard to pin down exactly what different people mean by the term. One definition that’s been put forth is from Jon Kabat- Zinn, the researcher behind Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). He defines mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non- judgmentally”. This lineage gets its teachings from one of the earliest sets of scriptures in Buddhism known as the Pali Canon. The Pali Canon inherited its name from the language in which it is written: Pali, which is related to Sanskrit. In Pali, the word we translate as “mindfulness” is sati. While MBSR and our modern conception of mindfulness may be derived from the ancient Buddhists texts, how much does our modern “mindfulness” resemble sati as described in the Pali Canon? And do either of these concepts resemble anything found in ancient Stoic writings? Can some form of “mindfulness” be found in the writings of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius? The goal of this essay, based on my workshop from Stoicon 2. Sati. To begin tackling this question, a good place to start would be looking for explicit definitions of sati in the Pali Canon. Unfortunately, little came up when I tried this approach. This is possibly because the term sati was well- understood and in common use during the time the Pali Canon was written. After all, I didn’t have to define “common” or “term” in the previous sentence, did I? But fortunately, we can still get some grasp on what sati means by looking at the etymology of sati and some similes the Buddha gives for sati. Let’s start with the etymology. Sati is a noun derived from the Sanskrit term smrti, which means recollection or calling to mind. The verb form of sati is sarati, meaning “to remember”. So it seems that sati has something to do with memory, at least from an etymological viewpoint. However, etymology can sometimes lead one astray. So let’s turn to some similes for sati the Buddha gave in the Pali Canon to see if we can triangulate its meaning. One such simile is found in Theragata 6. If your mind runs looseafter sensual pleasuresand states of becoming, quickly restrain it with mindfulness (sati)as you would a bad oxeating grain. Another simile comes to us from the Sutta Nipata 5. Whatever streamsthere are in the world: their blocking ismindfulness, mindfulness (sati)is their restraint — I tell you —with discernmentthey’re finally stopped. These two similes seem to indicate that mindfulness can act as a kind of restraint on the mind and “streams in the world” (which may be taken to mean sense data and the mind, as defined in Samyutta Nikaya 3. Note that this is pretty different from “mindfulness” as we defined it in the previous section; there it seemed relatively passive. Here it’s not. Sati also seems to have another major quality seen through similes in the Pali Canon. Let’s take a look at a couple of more similes to see what they’re pointing to. In the Anguttara Nikaya 6. Also, in Sutta Nipata 1. Both of these metaphors seem to indicate that sati has a guiding quality to it. The elephant metaphor illuminates what it is exactly that sati is guiding: the cultivation of wisdom. How sati could lead to wisdom is clarified through a few other similes. Anguttara Nikaya 7. Just as the royal frontier fortress has a gate- keeper — wise, experienced, intelligent — to keep out those he doesn’t know and to let in those he does, for the protection of those within and to ward off those without; in the same way a disciple of the noble ones is mindful, highly meticulous, remembering & able to call to mind even things that were done & said long ago. With mindfulness (sati) as his gate- keeper, the disciple of the . Together, these seem to point at how sati is thought to develop wisdom: through deeply and actively attending to one’s internal phenomenon, and noting what is harmful (or “unskillful”) and how it is so, along with what is helpful, or “skillful”. The faculty of sati requires attending to four specific areas, described briefly in Samyutta Nikaya 4. And what is the faculty of mindfulness (sati)? There is the case where a monk, a disciple of the noble ones, is mindful, highly meticulous, remembering & able to call to mind even things that were done & said long ago. He remains focused on the body in & of itself — ardent, alert, & mindful — putting aside greed & distress with reference to the world. He remains focused on feelings in & of themselves. This is called the faculty of mindfulness. The several practices to develop the faculty of sati within each of these four domains are laid out in more detail in Majjhima Nikaya 1. Satipatthana (“foundations of mindfulness”) Sutta. Going into the details of these practices is beyond the scope of this essay. But a refrain throughout that sutta tells us of some similar qualities used throughout all four areas: In this way he remains focused internally on the body/feelings/mind/mental qualities in & of itself, or externally. Or he remains focused on the phenomenon of origination with regard to the body/feelings/mind/mental qualities, on the phenomenon of passing away. Or his mindfulness that . And he remains independent, unsustained by (not clinging to) anything in the world. In short, one watches these four areas to see how they arise and pass away, maintaining enough attention for the sake of “knowledge & remembrance” while putting aside worldly concerns. The above seems to indicate to me that sati has many of the same qualities of mind that a student has when studying a subject they’re engrossed in. This is indicated through the allusions to memory and knowledge mentioned several times. But instead of studying textbooks, the practitioner is studying their phenomenological experience. There is also a judgmental aspect of sati that is not present in Jon Kabat- Zinn’s definition of a more modern form of mindfulness, as indicated by the simile of the gatekeeper and the metaphors of blocking streams and restraining an ox. One does not seem to simply observe passively, but instead one takes note of what phenomena are helpful or hurtful, how they are so, and what makes them arise and cease. In short, sati seems to be the careful self- study of one’s physical and mental experiences. Prosoche. Now that we’ve laid out one definition of modern mindfulness and gotten a sense of what ancient Buddhist sati is like, let’s turn our attention to Stoicism and ask if something similar to either of these notions be found in the ancient Stoic texts. Many people think there is, and that it can be found in the notion of prosoche. For instance, Donald Robertson seems to indicate that prosoche is similar to “mindfulness” when he writes: “Stoicism is a . He also suggests that “. For instance, Pierre Hadot calls prosoche “the fundamental Stoic spiritual attitude.” (Hadot, 1. And Christopher Fisher writes that “Prosoch. Constant attention is necessary to live according to Nature. Once one embarks on the path of the prokopt. And in 1. 1. 1. 6, Marcus states reminds himself“. Finally, in De Stoicorum Repugnantiis 1. Plutarch reports that Chrysippus said that there “. These three instances of the use of . These examples do not seem to have any connotations of “mindfulness” that we’ve seen thus far. In Marcus’ first quote above, it simply seems to mean that his father “paid attention to ” or “took care of” himself. In the second quote, he is simply using it as “paying attention” just as we would in modern English. In the last example, we see a similar use; it seems to simply mean “attention” – not a kind of mindful self- study of one’s phenomenological experience and behavior. There are plenty of Greek terms that I think are best left untranslated since they don’t loan themselves to easy, English translations (e. But prosoche is not one of them. While the term “prosoche” is just used to mean “attention” in many instances, it does play a role as a Stoic practice in Epictetus’ teachings, which he expounds upon in Discourses 4. On Attention”). There, he explicitly explains what a practicing Stoic should pay attention to: To what things should I pay attention, then? In the first place to those general principles that you should always have at hand, so as not to go to sleep, or get up, or drink or eat, or converse with others, without them, namely, that no one is master over another person’s choice, and that it is in choice alone that our good and evil lie. This bears some faint resemblance to mindfulness of thoughts and actions, but is quite different from sati’s four areas of mindfulness practices and Kabat- Zinn’s mindfulness of the present moment. What about the claim that prosoche is a fundamental Stoic spiritual attitude or practice? It is hard to answer this question since the large majority of Stoic texts are lost. However, we can take a stab at guessing how fundamental prosoche was to ancient Stoic practice by looking at how often the term was used and how widespread it was. One way prosoche could be considered fundamental is if it is mentioned by multiple authors writing about Stoicism. However, this isn’t something we witness in the extant texts. For instance, Diogenes Laertius does not use the term at all in his description of Stoic philosophy in Book VII of his Lives of the Eminent Philosophers. Marcus uses the term only three times, to my knowledge, in Meditations; two of the times were mentioned above, and the third time he quotes Epictetus as saying that we “must find an art of assent, and in the sphere of our impulses, take good care . However, the Latin translation of Epictetus’ writings often translate “prosoche” as “animadversio”. Seneca uses this word less than 1. ![]() Shop the Latest Clothes and Fashion Online. ![]()
